The increasing demand for better and cheaper products leads to the quest for even better designs as part of the overall product development strategy. Accordingly, companies in different geographical locations need to collaborate in order to realise shorter product life cycle, and hence shorter time to market. In order to assist designers in meeting this challenge in product development, conceptual design in particular, this work attempts to establish an intelligent hybrid approach to design analysis and design synthesis. The work proposes a new conceptual design paradigm known as design concept-capability mapping where past design data are used for the extraction of design rules. To facilitate the capturing of design knowledge comprising both functional design purpose and nonfunctional design purpose, a comprehensive design representation scheme known as Purpose-Behaviour-Structure has been proposed and developed. Past designs represented using the representation scheme are accessed by a rough set based approach for design rule extraction. The rough set based approach developed in this work is able to deal with four main issues in rule extraction, namely incomplete information, nondiscrete valued attributes, multiple decision attributes and incremental updating of rules. The approach is supported by mathematical proofs. Based on the approach and representation scheme developed, a framework of the conceptual design assistant (CDA) is proposed and realised. Two case studies are used to illustrate the capability of the CDA. It has been established that the CDA is able to fulfil the functions of design analysis and design synthesis.
