Fiber-reinforced composite laminates are increasingly used in the construction of aerospace, civil, marine, automotive and other high performance structures due to their high specific stiffness and strength, excellent fatigue resistance, longer durability as compared to metallic structures, and ability to be tailored for specific applications. Delamination is one of the important failure mechanisms in composite laminates. They may significantly reduce the stiffness and strength of the composites and affect the vibration behavior of the structures. Smart structures are systems that incorporate particular functions such as sensing, processing and actuation. They have the ability to sense certain stimuli and respond in a controlled manner. Smart structures are important because of their relevance to structural health monitoring, structural vibration control and transportation engineering. Piezoceramic materials are commonly used as sensors and actuators. However, their brittle nature and low tensile strength limit their ability to conform to curved shapes, which can be remedied through the use of arrays of piezoelectric sensors and actuators embedded within the structure. In this thesis, nondimensional parameters are introduced to study the vibration of bimaterial beams with a single delamination. The use of these parameters provides a better understanding on the effect of the bending stiffness and axial stiffness of the different layers on the vibration of delaminated bimaterial beams. Furthermore, it provides a physical understanding on the ‘constrained mode’ and ‘free mode’ assumptions that are used in delamination vibration.
