The continuing increase of recording density of magnetic hard disk drives (HDDs) requires a higher positioning accuracy within a narrower track width, making vibration control one more critical issue in HDD industry. A good knowledge of the vibration transmission characteristics within HDD may help the vibration reduction a lot. The objective of this study is to study the vibratory energy transmission within complex structures such as HDD using structural intensity. Firstly, the experimental determination of structural intensity in vibrating structures is studied and a novel experimental data processing scheme, B-spline surface fitting (BSSF) is proposed. The performance of the B-spline approximation in structural intensity calculation is investigated from a viewpoint of wave number domain (&-space) filtering. Relationship between parameters of the B-spline approximation and the &-space filter is established. The BSSF method as well as the experimental determination procedure is validated through both simulated and measured velocity data. With the experimental method established, the structural intensity within a near HDD base casing is investigated experimentally. Preliminary results show that it is feasible to visualise the vibratory energy within the base casing; however, further study is needed to eliminate the false energy source in the structural intensity pattern. Approaches of diverting the structural intensity in the base casing is studied using 3D solid elements. Simulation results show that proper addition of stiffener can change the orientations of energy flow in the base casing significantly. Therefore, it opens a door to divert the vibratory energy flow in the base casing effectively. iv ATTENTION: The Singapore Copyright Act applies to the use of this document.
