Investigations on plant responses to its growth environment are becoming increasingly important for advanced agriculture. The synergy of plant physiology with optical spectroscopy has enhanced opportunities in these investigations. Systems and protocols have been developed to investigate plant responses to mineral nutrient stress, drought stress and ambient carbon dioxide content variation. A nutrient stress analyzer was developed for plant mineral nutrient stress investigation. Both a lab-based and a field portable system were developed for acquiring the reflectance spectra from test leaves to provide pre-visual diagnostic information of nutrient deficient conditions. The spectra ranged from 380 to 780 nm were then analyzed for different characteristics such as the Red Edge Inflection Point (REIP), Specific Wavelength Response or the CIELAB color space values. A protocol was established for the systematic use of plant nutrient stress analyzer. The system was then verified for deficiency of calcium (Ca), iron (Fe) and phosphorus (P) status of Brassica chinensis L. var parachinensis (Bailey) grown under hydroponics conditions. It was found that monitoring of REIP shifts provided a useful spectral cue for pre-visual diagnosis of Ca deficiency in plants. The REIP of progressively maturing control (Ctrl) plants shifted toward longer wavelengths over the experimental period, while that of the Ca-deficient plants remained relatively unchanged. It was determined that if the REIP of a 24-day old plant did not reach or exceed 708 nm, then a Ca-deficient state was indicated. Fe-deprived plants showed rapid entry into a deficient state and the direct effect of Fe on chlorophyll content resulted in statistically significant changes in CIELAB color values two days prior m ATTENTION: The Singapore Copyright Act applies to the use of this document.
