This study was focused on evaluating mine drainage that has leached out from a tailings dam in the Sambo Pb– Zn mine in South Korea. The effluent water exceeded the environmental water quality guidelines for Al, Cd, Fe, Mn, Ni, Zn, and F. In addition to stream waters being influenced by the mining effluent, concentrations of Cd, Mn, Pb, Zn, and F were also found to exceed the guidelines for agricultural usage and the maximum allowable concentrations permitted by the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) were found. Furthermore, sediment samples taken in the study area also contained elevated levels of these metals. Therefore, it is strongly recommended that remediation programs be established in the study area, including a water treatment system.
