SELF-OBJECTIFICATION AND BODY SHAME AS PREDICTORS OF SPORT PARTICIPATION by Juliet A. Rose The purpose of this study was to determine if self-objectification and body shame could predict female participation in water polo, gymnastics, or a control group of nonsport participants. Past research has given physical activity mixed evaluations on its ability to help women see their bodies less shamefully and more competently; therefore, specific sports were researched. Self-reported measures were used to obtain selfobjectification and body shame scores for all participants. This study found through a discriminant analysis that 46.0% of all original grouped cases were correctly classified as water polo, gymnastics, or non-sport participants. There were not significant differences between the three groups on body shame; therefore, sport may not be a place where women can learn to reject culturally based body standards. However, water polo players had significantly lower self-objectification than non-sport participants, suggesting that women's participation in contact sport should be encouraged. Further thanks to Dr. Liberti for introducing me to this topic in her Philosophy of Sport and Embodiment class. Without reading Iris Young's (1990) article I am not sure I would have chosen this research path. Dr. Butryn and Dr. Wughalter's Research Methods class prepared me for writing this, so gratitude is owed to them for their bestowed knowledge. Several of Dr. Butryn's classes, in particular Sport Sociology, gave me alternative perspectives on this topic and even confirmed that this research was warranted. Dr. Lilienthal deserves a thank-you for saving me at least 10 hours of data reentry into SPSS from Excel, because she showed me how to transform my columns into rows in two clicks. Dr. Shifflett also helped me understand SPSS. She took the time to help me analyze and write-up my findings without even having me as a student.
