Every story has a milieu. The milieu can either be a rural or urban setting as it refers to a place of action or background against which a story takes place. The aim of this paper is to identify, explore and describe the different types of milieu and how they influence and shape the behavioral traits of the characters in the selected Xitsonga novels. The paper will also critically look at whether the milieu influences the character in a positive or negative way. The textual analysis and literary criticism will be employed to analyse the selected literary texts.
