FRONTIERS has developed a religious oriented approach to engage with and educate the community about FGM/C with the aim of encouraging them to question why the practice is sustained and move towards abandoning it. This approach has brought together the religious scholars in Wajir and other senior Islamic scholars within Kenya to debate the correct position of this practice within Islam and also borrow Shariah guidelines that are in essence contradicted by the practice to educate the community. The myths and misconceptions around the practice its purpose and thus perceived benefits can best be tackled with both religious and medical arguments. (Excerpt)
