This issue of the Quality/Calidad/Qualite presents case studies that describe the approach of developing health information by and for women in three different settings in the developing world. The authors narrate the story of their project comment on how involving women made a difference and reflect on implications for future activities. In each case womens involvement has resulted in a legacy of more than just a set of effective and well-utilized information materials. It has mobilized the women involved and enabled them to help themselves. The Cairo Womens Health Book Collective produced a comprehensive reference book entitled ‘Womens Lives and Health in Egypt’ specifically for women. In Peru the nongovernmental organization Peru-Mujer developed a series of illustrated teaching materials with the extensive involvement of their nonliterate audience. Finally an all-woman production crew in South Pacific developed three motivation and teaching videos in response to the expressed needs of Pacific Island women. Although the projects contrast in the characteristics of the intended audience the development process and the medium employed to deliver health messages they are all characterized by the active involvement of women at all levels and in all stages of project development.
