Since 1956, the canton of Ticino has carried out an extensive program to re-establish chestnut forests damaged by chestnut blight (Cryphonectria parasitica). This program was concluded in 1992 when the new federal forest law came into effect. Its realization has met difficulties of all kinds and was marked by a drastic change of sylvicultural methods. Various objectives have not been achieved; however, the project went hand in hand with many other realizations such as the professional training of forest workers, the creation of new forest enterprises, forest research within the chestnut region, the improvement of accessibility and the combatting of forest fires.
