Taphrina wiesneri, T. deformans, and T. pruni, causal agents of hyperplastic plant diseases, produce indoleacetic acid (IAA) from L-tryptophan via indole-3-pyruvic acid (IPyA) and indole-3-acetaldehyde (IAAld) as intermediates. They also convert indole-3-acetonitrile (IAN) into IAA. The enzyme, IAN nitrilase which catalyzes the conversion of IAN into IAA is an adaptive enzyme induced by the substrate, whereas Trp aminotransferase which converts Trp into IPyA is not induced by the substrate.
