A mathematical model which represents forest rainfall interception process has been developed in order to estimate forest evaporation apart from transpiration. This model consists of a canopy tank and a stem tank. The evaporation rate due to rainfall interception is supposed to be proportional to the product of potential evapotranspiration calculated by Penman's equation and canopy storage calculated by this model. The parameters of this model are identified by rainfall, stem flow and micrometeorological data; i.e. temperature, humidity, wind speed and radiation. This model is applied to Shirakawadani Experimental Catchment in Tokushima prefecture. Model parameters for a Sugi (Cryptomeria japonica) stand have no seasonal variation, so that the model requires only a set of parameter values through a year. Estimated evaporation by the model agrees with actual evaporation obtained from measurements of rainfall, throughfall and stem flow.
