Emergency Medicine in Poland has changed a lot in the last ten years. Social awareness and knowledge about fi rst aid have developed due to implementation of Emergency Medical System law and the increasing prevalence of formal and informal fi rst aid education. Elementary knowledge about providing fi rst aid in emergencies and the Emergency Medical System was surveyed among university students after fi rst aid education. 86 BARBARA SEWERYN, MIKOŁAJ SPODARYK, ANDRZEJ ZIARKO Material and methods: The study involved 158 full and part-time third year students at Krakow University. To accomplish the aim of the study, a diagnostic survey was carried out based on a questionnaire designed by the author. Results and conclusion: The level of knowledge among medical students (with the exception of paramedic students) is not signifi cantly diff erent from the knowledge of humanities students and students of security fi elds.
