珪長質の火山噴火は様々なスタイルで起こる.軽石や 火山灰を勢いよく噴出することもあれば,穏やかに溶岩 を流出することもある.1つの火山・1種類のマグマで も,はじめは爆発的に噴火したのち,溶岩を形成する噴 火に移行することも珍しくない.なぜ,噴火の仕方に差 異や変化が生じるのか.そもそも,何が噴火を引き起こ しているのか.このような基本的な疑問に答えるには, マグマ中で発生するガスの振る舞い方を詳しく理解する ことが欠かせない.なぜなら,ガスの発生こそが噴火の 原動力であり,ガスの働き方の違いによって噴火の仕方 が異なると考えられているためである1).火山物質科学 の分野では,噴出物を様々な手法で解析したり,噴火を 数式でモデル化したり,実験的にマグマを模擬すること によって,噴火の仕組みを解明しようとしてきた.本稿 では,こうして明らかにされてきたガスの働きと,今後 の課題について考える.
