The goal of this paper is to study the Rio Grande do Sul‘s waterways system. First, we approach the general view of the port system of the state and its main waterways, as well as its infrastructure, characteristics of its main port installations to be used in public or private ways and also the relation between transports and economic competitiveness. Also highlighted is the importance of the multi-modality, the inter-modality and of the logistics of the cargo transportation into our State. And subsequently we emphasise Rio Grande’s Port due to its location, its big volume of cargo movement, its huge economic importance that it aggregates to the state and also because of the possibility of the port of Rio Grande turn into the main exporting port of Mercosul.
