人為的にEdwardsiella tardaに感染させたヒラメからの排菌量を経時的に測定するとともに, 排出菌と培養菌との病原性の違いを感染実験により比較した。人為感染魚からは死亡する16日前からE. tardaが排出されるようになり, 死亡後は107108CFU/尾・分の菌が数日間排出され続けた。また, SS培地での15回継代による病原性の低下は認められなかったが, 排出菌の病原性は培養菌のそれよりも高かった。このように体外に排出された菌が感染の拡大に重要な役割を果たすものと推定される。
