This article discusses the group therapy of Keith Kennedy, who worked with young people and in residential care facilities, using photography as an experimental form of therapy. This article publishes material from Kennedy’s archive for the first time, which is fascinating. But it also makes the link between his work and that of Jo Spence, who worked with Kennedy. The article argues that Kennedy’s use of photography in group therapy had a crucial influence on Spence’s later development of ‘phototherapy’, a term she coined with Rosy Martin. This is then applied to a recent generation of artists who work with the internet.
