An Al-3.6 wt.% Li-2.0 wt.% Cu alloy was melt and cast in an argon atmosphere. The melt spun ribbons were cast at a linear rate of 10–20 m/s and aged at 200 °C. The kinetics and mechanism of the decomposition process during ageing were analysed. δ′ clusters of the size of 4–5 nm with a diffuse interface were identified, which after about 20 min ageing changes to a well-defined δ′ interface. After a long ageing time the δ′ phase transformed to the d phase. The existence of T 2  phase precipitates was found in the as-cast ribbons and also in the aged ones.
