Phase equilibria and extensions of solid solutions based on the binary La-phases of the NaZn 13 , ThMn 12 , and Th 2 Zn 17  structure types in several ternary systems are described. In the La–Fe –Al system, besides the ternary phases with the above given structure types, three other ternary phases of unresolved structures are obtained at compositions La 5 Fe 6 Al 4 , LaFe 2 Al 10  and La 2 Fe 2 Al 15 . The phase LaCo 13  (NaZn 13 ) dissolves up to 5.5 atoms of Fe per formula unit in place of Co leading to a steady increase of lattice parameter. Ternary phases with unresolved crystal structures are encountered in the La–Co –Fe alloys, one near LaCo 5  and another near the 2:17 stoichiometry. Likewise, LaCo 13  dissolves up to 3 atoms of Al per formula unit in place of Co. However, it dissolves very little, &lt;1 atom each of Mn, Cu, or Ni. Possibly two different Th 2 Zn 17 - type phases, one on the Co-rich side and the other on the Mn-rich side, occur in the La–Co –Mn alloys. Addition of Fe to LaCu 13  (NaZn 13 ) possibly leads to structural distortions. LaFe 9 Al 4  (NaZn 13 ) is softly ferromagnetic at 77 K; its Curie temperature is around 170 K. The La (Co, X) 13  solid solution phases with Fe and Al have much stronger ferromagnetic moments even at room temperature. The ThMn 12 - type phase in the La–Fe –Al system and the Mn-rich Th 2 Zn 17 -type phase in the La–Co –Mn system are weakly paramagnetic at room temperature.
