A new quasicrystal with no forbidden symmetry axes has been identified in a rapidly solidified Mg– 61 at.% Al alloy. Its structure is characterized by a cubic point group and aperiodic electron diffraction patterns showing inflation symmetry. Therefore this new structural state of matter stands as a cubic quasicrystal. The ratios between inflated motifsare frequentlyp close to irrationalvalues related to3    (i  .e  .   1  +   3   ,   3    and   (  1  +   3   )  /  2  )  .$\sqrt{3}\text{ (i}\text{.e}\text{. }1+\sqrt{3},\sqrt{3}\text{ and }(1+\sqrt{3})/2).$   This quasicrystal is metastable and transforms on annealing into the equilibrium fcc β phase (a = 2.83 nm).
