This report gives an overview of the various types of basic geological and seismological information that are needed when siting and designing lifeline systems in earthquake-prone areas of the United States. Two physical phenomena, permanent ground movements and dynamic ground shaking, are the most important considerations that must be assessed in regionaland urban-scale studies. Although the process of earthquake-resistant design of lifeline systems is complicated, the knowledge base on lifeline engineering has increased significantly since the 1971 San Fernando earthquake.

A review of information on seismic hazards needed for the earthquake-resistant design of lifeline systems in the United States
