*Aftershock zones for large earthquakes represent the area over which significant aftershock activity was observed in the immediate vicinity of the main shock, within tectonic environments coupled to the main shock system. For example, for the 2011 M 9.0 Tohoku earthquake, extensive aftershocks occurred on the interplate thrust contact between the Pacific and North America plates, as well as in the overlying upper plate, and on faults within the Pacific plate outboard of the subduction zone. We do not include more distant triggered aftershocks such as those that occurred on upper plate faults within mainland Japan.
