The Black Hills of South Dakota and Wyoming contain a wealth of mineral deposits that range in age from Early Proterozoic or Late Archean to Quaternary and in type from iron-formation to placer. Classification of the different deposits according to age, metals present, and structure of the deposits (De Witt and others, 1986) facilitates delineation of the metallic mineral districts shown on the accompanying maps. These metallic mineral districts differ significantly from conventional mining districts, which generally had geographic or political boundaries and could contain mineral deposits of differing ages and genesis. In contrast, metallic mineral districts are based on geologic criteria and are classified by age of mineralization, metals present, and structure of the deposit.
