Tributary streams occupy 0.003 percent of the area of Grand Canyon; however, 36 percent of the total riparian flora exists within those confines (John Rihs, hydrologist, GCNP, written commun., 2002). Baseline, seasonal, and annual water-quality data from springs along the south rim and identification of spring sources are needed to address four issues identified by GCNP: —The quality of water from springs and seeps can limit recreational use of the water.
