The Betsie Shale Member of the Breathitt Formation is one of only several regionally correlatable stratigraphic units to be identified and named in the last half century in the Pennsylvanian coal measures of Kentucky, West Virginia, Virginia, and Tennessee. Identified by its distinctive gamma-ray signature in oil and gas well logs, the unit is easily recognized in the deeper and less well known parts of the basin and will prove particularly useful for stratigraphic analyses of the lower part of the Pennsylvanian section.
