Ground water, soils, and plants from western New York state were analyzed for concentrations of selected minor and trace elements to determine their geochemical relationship to the underlying Lockport dolomite in the area. Included in the study was a discussion of trace metal concentrations in peat and mechanisms for their accumulation. Spectroscopy was utilized for elemental determinations. Vanadium, Zr, P, B, Co, Al, Cu, Ni, and Ba were concentrated in peat ash, with up to 16% Zn found in the samples. These metals were selectively deposited in peat by adsorption on the organic matter and by sulfide formation via bacterial precipitation or sulfate reduction. The unusually high Zn concentration was a result of its precipitation from ground water, having first been dissolved from mineralized beds in the Lockport dolomite underlying or adjoining the peat bogs.
