An evaluating method with small disk specimens of corrugated slate sheets used for station platforms for long period was studied. Firstly the technique to obtain a small disk specimen safely from an old roof was developed. Then mechanical properties of the specimens obtained from various old platform roofs were measured by splitting test, and their cross sections were investigated through microscope observation and EPMA analysis. It was assumed that the reduction in strength of them with time mainly caused by being thinned from surface due to abrasion and loss of Ca from slate sheets during in service.
