The effects of kinetin and gibberellic acid3 on in vitro growth of immature embryos from several Phaseolus vulgaris cultivars were studied. The f. vulgaris cultivars were 'Great Northern' ('GN'), '76 Spartan Arrow' ('76'), 'Royal Burgundy' ('RB'), 'Rustproof Golden' ('RG'), and 'Moon Gold' ('MG'). Twenty treatments from a factorial experiment with 5 concentrations of kinetin (0.00, 0.01, 0.10, 1.00, and 5.00 mg/1) and 4 concentrations of gibberellic acid (GA3 ) (0.00, 0.01, 0.10, and 1.00 mg/1) were used. Embryos from each cultivar were excised 10 days after self pollination, measured, and placed on a growth-regulator treatment. After 4 weeks of culture the embryos lengths were again measured and the growth change in culture was calculated. The kinetin effect on embryo growth in culture was significant at the 5% level for all cultivars tested except 'GN' and 'RB'. Regression analysis indicated that kinetin had a beneficial effect on '76' embryos with the concentration for optimum growth estimated to be 0.064 mg/1. Kinetin had an inhibitory effect on 'MG' and 'RG' embryos at all concentrations. There was no significant effect of GA3 on embryo growth in culture for any cultivar tested.
