In the constitution of research aimed at articulating history with the mathematics teaching, it is common to find studies on specific personalities, that were considered historic landmarks when it comes to some mathematical content. This is the result of the traditional history that still occupies most of the historical writings. Knowing that in Brazil there are still few studies on it, this article seeks to describe the relationship of William Oughtred's three main treatises with the teaching of mathematics in the 17th century. For this, the study was constituted as qualitative research and its base was of bibliographic and documental. Thus, the main materials for study were texts from a historical network, published by William Oughtred, such as, Clavis Matematicae, Trigonometrie, The Circles of Proportion and the Horizontal Instrvment, among others. From that, it is noted that, at that time, the works of William Oughtred were quite respected and influenced the scholars of the time. Besides that, although not present any documents about it, Oughtred had a “didactic-pedagogical idea” of how to teach mathematics and this is evidenced through the way his works were organized. Thus, it can be said that Oughtred's records, treated under an updated historiographic perspective, it can be incorporated into a network of ideas that help in understanding the construction of mathematical knowledge, collaborating for the development of research that deals with the mathematics teaching.
