The Australian gum leaf skeletoniser, Uraba lugens Walker (Lepidoptera: Nolidae), discovered in greater Mangere, Auckland, in February 2003, is potentially a significant threat to New Zealand eucalyptus plantations and amenity plantings. Because U. lugens had previously been found in Auckland (2001) and Tauranga (1997 and 2000), in 2001 MAF made the decision to have its sex pheromone identified for use in detection, delimitation and eradication of any further incursions. A joint HortResearch-University of Queensland team tackled the problem. Analysis by coupled gas chromatographelectroantennogram (GC-EAD) of the pheromone glands of U. lugens females revealed two major antennally active conjugated dienic compounds. Gas chromatograph-mass spectrometer analysis (GC-MS) confirmed the identity of these components. In April 2002 trapping trials were undertaken in Queensland and established that a blend of the two major components was necessary and sufficient to catch gum leaf skeletoniser males. Serendipitously, a second species of nolid moth (Nola sp. Leach) was also trapped in large numbers to other blends in the same trial. Deployment of monitoring traps for the latest incursion, in conjunction with further trials to refine the pheromone lure for U. lugens, has ensured that MAF now has an effective lure for assessing the success of any eradication programme.
