Drug-addiction is rooted in the conflict of the desire for total and immediate satisfaction and the law, which prohibits every human said satisfaction. Freud places the birth of civilization in this crucial conflict, represented in the myth of Oedipus. Civilization is based on a process of humanization. This process is possible thanks to certain laws which structure human relations and permit the satisfaction of desire. This conflict is where the drug-addict moves away from the external world -from communityby isolating himself in a unique heavenly relationship with the drug, thus recreating the unity of the lost paradise. As a consequence of this isolation, the drug-addict ́s humanization process is truncated.
