Pushkin’s poem Gabrieliad was published in 1918, eighty-one years after the poet’s death. Tsarist censorship had not allowed its circulation, labeling it as a sacred and obscene poem. The onomastics of the poem is rich in anthroponyms drawn from the New Testament and Biblical tradition. On this material, Pushkin operates a “lowering”, a “mortification” (M. Bakhtin, 1965), dragging it toward the ground-tomb, but at the same time involving it in a process of carnival regeneration that originates in the underbelly. The two worlds, the divine and the terrestrial, merge into this poem through sex, a carnival element which, by virtue of its nature, abandons the guilt and refuses its connection with sin, thus representing the explosive novelty of the poem.
