The Latin phrase Mens sana in corpore sano determined modern man to be in constant pursuit of pharmaceutical alternatives to allopathic treatments. Thus, the last two decades have led to the appearance of natural remedies and/ or dietary supplements on the Romanian pharmaceutical market under different forms: capsules, syrup, oil, tea etc. Numerous onymic possibilities may be identified in their nomenclature with direct reference to: a) the name(s) of the plant(s) or herbal products in their composition: Garlicaps, Hibistad, Propolis & echinacea forte; Armuhep; b) the organ/condition and therapeutic function of the natural product: Sanohepatic, Reglatens, Stomacalm, Glicemo stabil, Detox Suplu. The plants used in these alternative therapies are registered under their scientific names (in a more or less truncated/“altered” form: Garlicaps), common names (Armuhep < milk thistle) or designations from the sphere of folklore: Mâna Maicii Domnului (‘honeysuckle’, literally ‘Mother of God’s Hand’), Gheara Dracului (‘devil’s claw’). In categorising these names, we take into account several criteria: etymological (Alergy Stem, Memory Stem, Relax Well, Heppy Vibe), lexical-semantic (Optimist, Serenis), or pragmalinguistic (Detox Activ, ColonProtect).
