In Colombia there is a substantial lack of information about the diseases affecting the population and the way they are managed, especially in fields such as thoracic surgery. When added to the complexity of patients with lung diseases, this calls for the foundation of an institutional registry of thoracic surgery capable of providing information concerning the outcomes of patients and comparing them with other institutions and registries at the world level. An institutional registry of thoracic surgery was established in order to gather all patients older than 18 years who underwent lung resection, and to evaluate demographic data, comorbidities, diagnoses. types of intervention, and outcomes. A total number of 43 patients were registered, with a mean age of 56 (± 17) years; 90% had sorne comorbidity, 42% were dlagnosed with lung cancer, 51,2% underwent pulmonary lobectomy, the median hospital stay was 9 days, 41,8% had sorne postoperative complication. and the mortality was 9.4%. This article presents the first data of an institutional reglstry of thoracic surgery, in order that they may be compared with data from other countries for the improvement of patient care. The number of patients will hopefully increase as time goes by, so that better analyses can be done.
