The need for a utility function that takes into account the preferences of all family members is explained. An approach which assumes totally independent preferences for each of the family members is described. A model suggested by a generalization of the multivariate partial-adjustment hypothesis is proposed. Implications of this estimation for policy are discussed. The model is presented in detail and the estimation technique, which is a 2-stage least-squares analogue for simultaneous-equation models with limited dependent variables, is described. Sources of data are given, and dependent variables are defined. Results of the analysis are presented in the following tables: 1) correlation matrix for variables pertaining to Pakistani women under 40 years of age; 2) Pakistani husbands' demand for additional children; 3) Pakistani wives' demand for additional children; 4) ever-use of family planning methods by Pakistani women under 40 years of age. Concluding remarks support the concept of an advanced estimating method.
