The influence of locus of control and stress on coping strategies in relation to volcanic risk were studied in 156 people living near the Popocatepetl volcano in Mexico. The participants with a limited educational background were more likely than those with higher education to use passive coping strategies. Linear regression showed that a higher level of psychological stress predicts more active strategies. These results confirm some of our previous studies. Probable explanations for our findings are discussed.
