KEYWORD: Modern tram, Net-operation separation, Optimal operating length ABSTRACT: With consideration of operating speed, road conditions, economic benefits, and forecast passenger volume, an optimization method was proposed to determine the optimal length of modern tram line. Based on the principles of net-operation separation, theoptimal operating length of tram is determined according to tram road characteristics, and the model was verified by an example. Analysis result showed that the optimal length for modern tram lines are between 15km and 25km under normal intensities of passenger flow, which was inversely proportional to the optimal length of tram line.
