Selected Neogene and Quaternary diatom taxa of the genera Actinocyclus, Asteromphalus, and Thalassiosira, that were recovered in ODP (Ocean Drilling Program) Leg 113 drillholes, are described and discussed based on light and scanning electron microscope observations. Some of these diatoms are useful stratigraphic markers or indicators for pa­ leoceanographic reconstructions. Their stratigraphic range and abundance pattern in the southern high-latitudes is de­ scribed and compared to their ranges in low- and northern high-latitudes, and their significance for paleoceanographic reconstructions is briefly discussed. Two new Asteromphalus species and the new variety Actinocyclus ingens var. ovalis are described, and Coscinodiscus kolbei Jouse is transferred to the genus Thalassiosira.
