Paleomagnetic and rock magnetic results of basalts drilled during DSDP Leg 70, associated with the Galapagos Spreading Center near 86°W, show that in this area of high amplitude magnetic anomalies the rocks are characterized by unusually high magnetization intensities—/NRM = 20 × 10~ 3 gauss—for Sites 506-508, whose ages are 0.5-0.8 m.y. Magnetic measurements of /NRM, x> and Q and paleoinclination data are consistent with a relatively uncomplicated 0.5 to 1-km-thick magnetized layer, responsible for the observed magnetic anomalies at Sites 506-508 and Site 510. The magnetic measurements suggest that Site 510, which is 2.7 m.y. old, is outside the zone of high amplitude magnetic anomalies.
