Site 348 attracted a great deal of interest because the hole was drilled within the Icelandic Basin, which represents a large depression in the Icelandic Plateau. Laboratory studies consisted of a determination of: sediment grain sizes, the mineralogic composition of the coarse silt fraction (0.1 to 0.05 mm), and the chemical composition and the composition of clay minerals in the less than 0.001 mm size fraction.
