During Leg 35 of D/V Glomar Challenger from Callao, Peru to Ushuaia, Argentina, 2 February to 30 March 1974, surface water samples (4 m water depth) were collected in the southern part of the East Pacific Ocean, off the coast of Chile and in the Bellingshausen Sea. The study is supplementary to the investigation done on fossil diatoms of the sediment cores recovered during the leg (see Schrader, this volume). Figures 1, 2, and 3, and Table 1 show the position of the stations at which plankton collections and simultaneous surface water temperature measurements were made. The object of the study was to determine: (1) patterns of the quantitative distribution of diatom species in the eastern South Pacific Ocean, with special emphasis on the distribution of Antarctic marine planktonic diatom species which are also found in sediment assemblages; (2) to provide information on the application of biometrical studies for reconstruction of past fluctuations in the general Antarctic circulation system.
