本研究は有機性廃水処理法として注目されている二酸化チタンを光触媒とする光化学処理法をクロロホルム水溶液に適用したものである。クロロホルム初濃度3.0×10-51.0×10-3mol・l-1, 二酸化チタンスラリー濃度501,000mg・l-1の条件で模擬太陽光による照射実験を行って次の結果が得られた。 (1) クロロホルムは二酸化チタン表面に生成する・OHラジカルにより効率よく分解し, 二酸化炭素と塩化水素になる。 (2) クロロホルム初濃度が大きいときはpH低下により分解速度が低下するが, 1.0×10-4mol・l-1以下の濃度ではその影響はない。 (3) 溶存酸素は直接分解に寄与しないが間接的に影響を与える。その他, 実験結果をよく説明する分解機構の推定を行った。
