A simple and convenient procedure for the synthesis of 5H- dibenzo(b,i)xanthene-tetraones and aryl-14H-dibenzo(a,j)xanthenes is described through the condensation of aldehydes with 2-naphthol or 2-hydroxy-1, 4-naphthoquinone under solvent-free conditions in the presence of ferric chloride hexahydrate. This method has the advan- tages of high yields, cleaner reaction, simple work-up and cost ef- ficiency.
