Rubella is caused by a virus in the Togaviridae family, genus Rubivirus. It is a benign disease characterized by a macular rash accompanied by low fever, joint pain, pharyngitis and cervical adenopathies. The infection can in some cases be asymptomatic, although it can become severe when it occurs during pregnancy [1]. The teratogenic properties of the rubella virus were irst discovered in Australia in 1941 by Gregg who associated the occurrence of rubella during pregnancy with the presence of congenital cataracts [2].
