The paper analyzes the sources of occurrence in oil reservoirs of biomarkersrelated to tetracyclic and pentacyclic isoprenoids. These molecules are widely known andtraditionally used as indicators of oil maturity; however, the concept of organisms thatproduce these molecules remains controversial. A look at these biomarkers in the lightof modern advances in microbiology indicates that some of these molecules weresynthesized by microorganisms of the underground biosphere directly in the deposits.This interpretation invites us to rethink and re-evaluate geochemical indicators thatare considered non-informative and often ignored.
