ResumenLa modificacion del Indice de Masa Corporal (IMC) como indicador de salud nutricional, en el personal de la Fuerza Aerea Ala de Combate No 21, Ecuador, tiene relacion con su mayor o menor gasto energetico, de acuerdo a la actividad fisica que desarrollan. Este criterio no se generaliza en un diagnostico en salud nutricional porque se requiere establecer: localizacion de la adiposidad, riesgo de padecer lesiones cardiovasculares, obtenido mediante circunferencia de cintura y, en aquellos casos donde el Indice de Masa Corporal es positivo, para sobrepeso y obesidad, se debe determinar porcentaje de masa grasa corporal, diferenciando asi los casos en los que exista un incremento de masa muscular, en ambos casos se requerira asistencia y planeacion alimentaria. Del universo de 850 miembros activos y muestra de 160 participantes, el 40% presento exceso de peso, de los cuales 78,3% categorizo con sobrepeso y 21,7% obesidad. 25,6% presento riesgo alto de padecer enfermedades cardiovasculares y 7,5% riesgo muy alto, 25 % mostro antecedentes familiares de enfermedades cardiovasculares y metabolicas. 60% del grupo etario de 18 a 34 anos evidencio obesidad segun analisis de porcentaje de grasa, a diferencia del grupo etario de 35 a 59 anos de edad, con 11%.Palabras Clave: sobrepeso, obesidad, porcentaje de masa grasa, indice de riesgo metabolico. Modification of the Body Mass Index (BMI) as an indicator of nutritional health amongst staff of the Air Force Combat Wing No. 21, Ecuador, is related to their degree of energy expenditure, according to physical activity performed. This approach does not generalize on nutritional health diagnosis because it requires setting: location of adiposity risk of cardiovascular lesions, obtained by waist circumference and, in cases where the Body Mass Index is positive for overweight and obesity, determining percentage of body fat mass and distinguishing the cases in which there is an increase in muscle mass. Both food and planning assistance is required. Amongst the sample of 850 active members and 160 sample participants, 40 % were overweight, of which 78.3 % categorized mildly overweight and 21.7 % obese. 25.6 % had high risk for cardiovascular disease and 7.5 % very high risk, 25 % had a family history of cardiovascular and metabolic diseases. 60 % of the age group 18 to 34 years showed obesity as fat percentage analysis, unlike the age group of 35-59 years old, with 11 %.
