Os estudos sobre areas litorâneas demonstram que a erosao costeira promove perdas economicas onde esse processo e atuante. Haja vista a importância economica da regiao adjacente a foz do Rio Apodi-Mossoro (RN), por se tratar de uma importante regiao produtora de sal marinho no Brasil, emerge a necessidade de estudo sobre a evolucao da linha de costa, no intento de compreender a sua dinâmica. O presente estudo tem como objetivo analisar a evolucao da linha de costa da regiao adjacente a foz do Rio Apodi-Mossoro (RN), em analise multitemporal de 1987 a 2014. Para alcancar esse objetivo foi realizado o processamento digital de imagens, confeccao de mapas da variacao da linha de costa e identificacao e quantificacao das areas em erosao (retrogradacao) e/ou acrecao (progradacao). A area total modificada pelos processos de acrecao e erosao vem aumentando ao longo dos periodos analisados, bem como a erosao que cresceu nos dois ultimos periodos (2001- 2011 e 2011 - 2014), especialmente nas praias de Upanema, do Meio, do Pontal (Areia Branca) e de Pernambuquinho (Grossos). O estudo permitiu observar que o processo de erosao predominou para o periodo de 1987 - 2014. Contudo, quando e observado que a diferenca entre os processos de acrecao e erosao foi pequeno (8,16 ha) pode-se concluir que ha um relativo equilibrio no periodo analisado por este trabalho. Deste modo, surge a necessidade de um monitoramento continuo dessa area no intuito de melhor compreender o comportamento da linha de costa. Given the economic importance of the region adjacent to the mouth of the river Apodi-Mossoro (RN), because it is an important salt-producing region in Brazil, emerges the need of study on the evolution of the coastline, in the attempt to understand its dynamics. This study aims to analyze the evolution of the coastline of the region adjacent to the mouth of the river Apodi-Mossoro (RN), multi-temporal analysis of 1987 to 2014. To achieve that goal was the digital processing of images, making maps of the coastline variation and identification and quantification of eroding areas (retreating coast) and/or accretion (advancing coast). The total area modified by accretion and erosion processes is increasing over the period analyzed, as well as the erosion that has grown in the last two periods (2001-2011 and 2011-2014), especially on the beaches Upanema, do Meio, Pontal (Areia Branca) and Pernambuquinho (Grossos). The study allowed to observe the process of erosion prevailed for the period 1987-2014. However, when it is observed that the difference between the processes of accretion and erosion was relatively small (8,16 ha) we can conclude that there is a relative balance in the period covered by this work. Therefore, there is the need for continued monitoring of this area in order to better understand the shoreline behavior. Keywords: coastal erosion, multitemporal analyses, geoprocessing.
