O objetivo deste trabalho foi o de quantificar as variabilidades sazonais e interdecadais da precipitacao pluvial nas diferentes microrregioes geograficas do estado da Paraiba. Para essas investigacoes foram utilizadas series pluviais mensais e anuais, do periodo: janeiro de 1970 a dezembro de 2009, de seis cidades pertencentes as microrregioes do Agreste, Cariri, Curimatau, Serra do Teixeira, Serido e Sousa. Cada serie foi analisada, estatisticamente, comparando-se as medias anuais da chuva observada, nas escalas decadais e nas quatro estacoes do ano, com as respectivas medias aritmeticas de cada uma das series  o desvio padrao (DP). Os principais resultados mostraram que a precipitacao pluvial, em qualquer uma das microrregioes, e irregular e assimetrica. No entanto, as medias observadas da precipitacao, nas escalas temporais de decadas, interdecadais e/ou por estacoes, quando comparadas com as suas respectivas medias + DP foram, menores que as medias aritmeticas das series e/ou maiores que as medias - DP. O outono e a estacao do ano mais chuvosa, intercalada pelo verao e inverno, sendo a primavera a mais seca. As epocas de chuvas na mesorregiao do sertao paraibano se concentram no verao e outono e nas microrregioes do Agreste, Cariri e Curimatau entre o outono e inverno. A decada de 90 foi a mais seca e a de 2000, a mais chuvosa. As dispersoes nas medias decadais e sazonais da chuva observadas indicam uma elevada variabilidade natural no regime pluvial e nao ha indicios de mudancas climaticas. A B S T R A C T The objective of this study was to quantify seasonal and inter decadal rainfall variability in different geographic regions of the State of Paraiba. For these investigations monthly and annual rainfall series for the period were used: January 1970 to December 2009, six localities belonging to the micro region of the Cariri Curimatau, Serra do Teixeira, Serido and Sousa. Each series was analyzed statistically by comparing the observed decadal averages of rainfall and the seasons with their arithmetic averages of the series ± standard deviation (SD). The main results show that precipitation, in any one of micro region, is irregular and asymmetric. However, the observed average rainfall, by decades, interdecadal and weather stations, when compared with their respective mean ± SD were always smaller than the arithmetic mean of the series and higher than average – DP. The autumn is the season of the rainiest year, interspersed by summer and winter, and springs the driest. The rainy periods in the middle region of the Paraiba backwoods concentrated in summer and autumn and in the micro regions of the Agreste, Cariri and Curimatau between autumn and winter. The 90s decade was the driest and 00, rainier. The dispersions in seasonal and decadal averages of observed rainfall indicate a high natural variability in rainfall patterns and show no signs of climate change.
