One of the most frequent problems faced by a first cycle university student is his lack of knowledge of the environment as well as the radical change in work methodology and study system, which affects his academic performance and his social development. This article describes a good practice of teaching innovation in a Latin American university on the implementation of the mentoring project for undergraduate university student through accompanying activities to facilitate their adaptation. It was developed in 16 university career during two academic periods with the participation of mentors and students, involved in the selection, execution and evaluation phases. There is evidence of improvements in academic performance and notable drops in dropout and disapproval rates. In order to improve the process, it is suggested: (a) strengthening organization and planning, (b) profiling of mentored students to detect possible cases of risk (c) combining formal activities with informal activities and group actions with individuals (d) implementation of a specific training plan accompanied by practical phases that show real situations (e) enhancing e-mentoring given the current profile of university students
