The dental enamel is composed of many enamel rods, which are also composed of many crystallites when observed under the electron microscope. This fact was first found by Bo y 1 e, Hillier and Davidson (1946). Thereafter a similar ultrastructure which is composed of crystallites was observed by Syr r i s t (1949), Menke (1950), Robinson (1952), Frank (1952), Sognnaes, Scott, Ussing and Wyckoff (1952), Helmcke (1953 and 1955), W a t son and Avery (1954), and H a 1 1 (1958). Their results are tabulated on Table II. On the other hand, the ultrastructure of the bone has been demonstrated as quite similar to the dental tissue by Robinson and his school as follows ; Robinson and Bishop (1950), R obi nson (1951 and 1952), Robinson and Watson (1952 and 1955), and Watson and Robinson (1953). Schwarz and Pahlke (1953) made essentially the same observation as Robinson independently. They studied the relationship of crystallites and collagen fibers which form the matrix of the bone, with the conclusion that the c-axis of the crystal coincided with the long axis of the fiber and that the most probable mature crystal length was estimated to be 350 to 400A. Crystal particles were found in the interfibrillar cement substance, and were deposited in the band regions of the collagen, increasing in diameter as age increased. Watson and Aver y applied the above results to the dental enamel and reached the following conclusion ; the c-axis of the crystal lattice of the enamel coincides with the long axis of the matrix fiber, and the deposition of the inorganic components relates with the macromolecules of the eukeratin that forms the matrix
